Questions to ask your contractor

It is critical to choose a professional, licensed and well-established contractor when performing mitigation. Asking your professional contractor these six questions can ensure that you make an informed decision.

  1. Ask your contractor if they are a member of a local, regional or national association.
  2. Ask your contractor for references of past customers.
  3. Ask your contractor if the product you choose has an approved applicator program and if they are certified to apply the product.
  4. Ask your contractor who will inspect the work of the crew installing your roof.
  5. Ask your contractor for the names of a few of their material suppliers and call them for assurance.

It is also important to keep in mind these helpful tips to follow when hiring a contractor:

  1. Get at least three estimates from different licensed and insured contractors for the same job.
  2. Read your contract very carefully, including warranty information on any products used to strengthen your home.
  3. Never make full payment up front. Reputable contractors will accept payment based upon percentage of work completed.
  4. Obtain lien waivers to ensure that no one who supplied materials can put a lien on your home because the contractor did not pay them.
  5. Make sure that the products used meet code requirements in your area and all appropriate building permits have been pulled.
